The Zephyrus lineup has always thrived to stay ahead of its competition and the story with the g14 is no different. About a year or year and a half ago when Asus decided to create the g14, they made a bold choice to go with an AMD processor, despite AMD’s track record with laptop processors. Nevertheless, it was a decision that has paid off well in the G14.
The Zephyrus G14 comes with the 8-core AMD Ryzen 9 4900HS CPU and is the red team’s answer to the blue team’s i9!
A Job Well Done!
Let me start by saying, The Ryzen 9 4900HS absolutely smashes all the records set by Intel out there! It is an 8-Core, 16 thread processor that beats the i9 by 2 cores and 4 threads It would have been so much better for the laptop industry if other manufacturers had got their hands on this processor, which would have made this year, the year of team red.
Firstly, let’s talk about the build quality. The G14 has an excellent build quality. It is just 0.7 inches thick, but packs such a powerful processor and has 16 gigabytes of RAM along with a GTX 2060. It has a solid magnesium-alloy chassis which helps it be lightweight while having all the necessary features. If you are looking for a laptop that you can easily game on and that actually fits in your backpack, this is the one to go for.
Display
Coming to the display, it is available in 2 options – a 1080p 120Hz screen and a 2K 60Hz display. It is a 14-inch display, so most of us can get away with the 1080p model, but if you are into content creation, video editing, or graphic designing, you might want to go for the QHD panel. There is a minute and noticeable lag in response time, which makes the display a little sluggish, but most of us won’t even notice it unless you were looking for it. Overall the display is of excellent quality and you will enjoy playing games without any problems
An interesting fact while talking about the display is that this device has not 1 but 2! Yes, you read that right. Some select models have an “AniMe Matrix LED Display”. This is just a grid matrix of LEDs on the back of the device. It is still uncertain how this would affect battery life but it looks really cool. It is something that you won’t be seeing all the time, but will buy it to let others know of this, ‘Meme Machine’. With the right content, you could be the kid everyone talks about.
Points to Look For
The Asus Zephyrus G14 has a general aesthetic that might be bordering a little much on the capital-G Gamer for some folks, but it’s not too bad. The chiclet keyboard is extremely well-spaced and comfortable to type on. This is surprising just because of how small of a footprint the device actually has. What we really like about the keyboard, however, is the dedicated buttons at the top. We don’t know about you, but the ability to change the volume on the fly without messing around with combining the Fn key with one of the Function Keys at the top is a nice touch. There’s also a dedicated key for opening Armory Crate, which will let you control system performance and RGB lighting with supported Aura Sync-ready components.
2 things to mention here are – It does not have a webcam, nor does it use USB Type-C for charging. The charging port is also awkwardly located in the center on the left-hand side.
All In one
the only con is that it lacks a top-end GPU inside, but works amazing at an affordable price. It has comparable performance to a 45W, 6-core, 12 threads Intel CPUs in the same price range. The only thing I got to complain about is the absence of a webcam.
