There arent many ways to unread messages on Instagram. The number of ways can be increased if you go third-party apps, which is not advisable. Since Instagram is used for private messaging. Providing access to third-party apps is not safe.
How to mark messages as unread on a Business account
If you are a business owner you may not be having time for replying to all the messages. and you cant leave the messages unattended as there could be an important one. In this time you can read the important message and mark the unimportant message as unread. You can attend to those messages when you are free.
This won’t upset a sender, so they won’t feel ignored. Marking the messages as unseen on the business account is very simple. It can be performed within 4 steps. Follow the below method to do so.
Step 1: Open Instagram and head over to messages.
Step 2: Select the Conversations using the Select option in the top-right corner.

Step 3: Then Tap on More on the bottom left corner of the screen.

Step 4: Now tap on “Mark as unread” and it’s done.

How to mark messages as unread on a personal account
The above-mentioned method is only available for business accounts. These options are not available for personal accounts. You can create a business account or convert your existing account into a business account. You can use the “Restrict” function as the alternative for the above method.
You may have observed that message requests are always marked as unread even if you read them. The restrict provides the same function. It turns a Direct message into a message request. Although this method is not very feasible. It provides a way to mark messages as unseen.
If you haven’t accepted a message request yet then you don’t have to do anything. If you have already accepted the request follow the below method.
Step 1: Open your Instagram and head to the profile page of the user whose message you want to make as unread.

Step 2: On the top right corner there will 3 vertical dots. Tap on it.
Step 3: Select the restrict option. This will make DM’s message request.

Step 4: You will be asked for confirmation on tapping restrict. Tap on the restrict account or Dismiss.

Step 5: You are good to go. Now all the incoming messages from that account will be placed in message requests.
